'With this ring...'
To the Editors:
This letter is written regarding on of your advertisers, Rinaldi Jewelers. We want to publicly thank "Lil" John and Sherry, and to let your readers
know what a great experience it was doing business with them. We purchased our commitment rings from them, and never once were we made to feel uncomfortable. They were very courteous and understanding with our needs, and they treated us with the utmost respect. We would recommend doing business with them to anyone.

ACT UP has recently prompted opposing views in this forum. I find some valid points in each opinion because all speak to the need for our involvement—and all the more urgent since the recent voter approbation of the GOP.
Some within the mainstream deserve and may learn from "in your face" treatment, but high profile activism is not the exclusive means to effect change or even to safeguard our own identity. No less valid is involvement by gays and lesbians of quieter temperament who, in their commitment to minority issues, educate the mainstream in every-day social interaction: among relatives, on the job, in the neighborhood. Bigots refuse to learn; but bigots also refuse to accommodate personality differences.

as moral tribunal for the nation? Can anyone deny the influence of the stifling good old boy system both in the military and most organized religions? They empower civilian and secular society with arrogance enough to ignore or at least abridge even our civil rights.
Yet, how ironic that neither religion nor our Congress has figured out how to actualize E Pluribus Unum. Therefore, as individuals within the gay and lesbian community, let's each in our own way "act up," but also let's keep aware of what Candide learned: make our garden grow.
Therefore, let's join ACT UP, the Log Gay GOP
Cabin Club, the ACLU or any gay advocacy, whether we're faggy, dykey or "drop dead" gorgeous, but let's not make our affiliations and identifications causes for division. We're back to pre-Stonewall unless we rally around similarity. Can anyone deny that we are labeled the enemy of social stability by those who rally around anti-gay sentiment? This malicious activism has made bedfellows of the Christian Coalition and the Roman Catholic Church. Can anyone deny their influences

This year's Republican landslide proves that the gay community should no longer put all their "political eggs in the Democratic basket."
For 14 years, most gay leaders (who happen to be Democrats) have urged the gay community to ignore the Republican Party and just vote Democratic. Some gay activists even suggested that the Republican Party
THE BLOOD ON HIS HANDS COVER THE DIRT IN HIS FINGERNAILS
was finished after the defeat of President Bush in 1992. This years midterm elections, with massive Republican wins from coast to coast, proves once and for all that the Republican Party can no longer be ignored.
Gay voters must work within the GOP to educate party officials and office holders on the rights and needs of gay Americans. Yes, we have homophobes in our Party like Jesse Helms. But we also have pro-gay Republicans like Massachussetts Governor Bill Weld, Rhode Island Senator John Chafee, Congressmen Chris Shays from Connecticut and Connie Morella from Maryland. We must work to add to this list of pro-gay Republicans at all levels of government, local, state and federal.
And if you think there are no homophobes in the Democratic Party, we have two words for you: Sam Nunn.
Homophobia is a bi-partisan disease requiring a bi-partisan cure.

In the November 11 issue, Jamie Butkovic was incorrectly named as the author of the obituary for Terry Cahill. The obituary was written and submitted by Terry's loving partner and friend, Caroline. The Chronicle regrets the error, and sincerely apologizes to Caroline, Jamie, and Terry's family and friends for any additional grief this incident may have caused.

Shadow's Fall
(In Memory of Terry Cahill)
In the shadow of a killer
we spend our days
He is unseeable and unknowable
but he is here just the same
Man, woman, or child
Black or white
Gay or straight
He does not discriminate
Killing without remorse or feeling
Knowing nothing of love, hope, or compassion Thousands of innocent victims
have fallen prey to his evil
Thousands more yet to fall
For all his victims
living or dead
i offer this prayer
May his shadow soon be lifted
so we may again walk safely through our days.
